The Group for the study of the invasive fungal infection GEIFI (Grupo de Estudio de la Infección Fúngica Invasora) at the University of the Basque Country, was created by Dr. José Pontón, deceased in july 2010. Thanks to his enthusiasm and initiative, Dr. Pontón was able to involve in the group a good number of investigators dealing with the suydy of fungal infections, which are willing to continue his avenue of investigation.

GEIFI is devoted to the study of the invasive fungal infection, one of the main problems of the immunocompromised patients. The activity of the group is focused on the study of the biology of fungi causing human invasive infections, in an attempt to understand its pathogenesis and improve its diagnosis and treatment. GEIFI is a Consolidated Group of Research of the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU), and is considered as a High Efficiency Group by the Department of Education, Universities and Research of the Basque Government. Along the last ten years, the group as a whole can prove a coherent trajectory and a continuous funding by diverse organisms (UPV/EHU, Department of Education and Science of the Spanish Government, Sanitary Research Fund, Basque Government, and European Union).
