Biography

Gonzalo Guerrica-Echevarria earned his BS in Chemistry from the University of the Basque Country in 1993. He obtained his PhD in the same university in 2002. He worked for three years and a half in Lea-Artibai Ikastetxea teaching in "Polymer Engineering" for North London University and in November of 2002 started as Associate Professor at the University of the Basque Country.

Research

Dr. Guerrica-Echevarria develops his research activity in the field of the processing-structure-properties relationship of thermoplastic materials, specifically in the field of polymer blends, including reactive processing, filled and reinforced polymers. He has experience in several polymer processing techniques (blending, extrusion, injection molding…), and also in the physical (DSC, DMTA, SEM,.) and mechanical (tensile, flexure, impact testing, ...) characterization of these materials.

Biography

Nora Aranburu (ORCID: 0000-0001-5730-9867), PhD in Polymer Science, UPV/EHU and POLYMAT Assistant Professor, Department of Polymers and Advanced Materials: Physics, Chemistry and Technology.

Research

Her research is focused on the development of new materials based on polymer blends and nanocomposites by melt processing, establishing processing-structure-properties relationships. Recently, she has extended her interest into the development of bio-polymers with advanced performance, aiming for the eventual replacement of the conventional petrochemical polymers.

Dr. Aranburu has extensive experience in the processing and thermal, morphological and mechanical characterization of polymeric materials. This includes the use of standard equipment employed in processing (extruders and injection and compression moulding machines), as well as several characterization techniques: differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), dynamic mechanical-thermal analysis (DMA), melt flow index (MFI), mechanical tests (tension, compression, bending, impact tests), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), the determination of electrical conductivity...

Publications

She has published 19 papers in international peer reviewed journals, more than 20 contributions in national and international conferences and she has participated in 8 research projects funded by several institutions (UPV/EHU, Basque Government, MINECO, European Community).

Biography

Dr. Itziar Otaegi (ORCID code: 0000-0001-8269-8489) is a post-doctoral researcher in the Polymer Technology Group of the POLYMAT Institute. She is a member of the Grupo Consolidado y de Alto Rendimiento (IT1309-19) “Propiedades Físicas y Procesado de Polímeros (PROPOL)” of the Basque Government.

Research

Her research activity focuses on the processing-structure-property relationship of polymer blends and nanocomposites based on thermoplastic polymers, principally bio-based and/or biodegradable. She has also worked in projects in collaboration with enterprises. According to teaching, she gives laboratory practices in the degree of Chemistry (Material Science, Macromolecular Materials I and Macromolecular Materials II) and in the Master’s degree of Chemistry and Polymers (Advanced techniques for polymer processing and Optimization by computer assisted Simulation). Moreover, she carried out the first on-line thesis defense of Polymat (2nd July 2020), which was awarded with the Koldo Mitxelena Award 2020 for the best Basque Thesis, in the field of Engineering and Architecture.

Publications

Since her incorporation to the UPV/EHU in 2014, she has participated in 5 competitive research projects of diverse funding (Basque Government, UPV/EHU, MINECO), published 4 papers in first quartile indexed journals and contributed to 11 conferences, 9 of which international.

Persona Fernandez Ainhoa

Biography

Ainhoa Fernández Tena obtained her BSc in Chemistry in 2018 and her MSc in Chemistry and Polymers (with a specialization in Polymers) in 2019, from the University of Basque Country (UPV/EHU). She obtained Basque Government and Polymat grants for the development of her Bachelor and Master Thesis, respectively.

Besides, she did summer internships at CICnanoGUNE in 2017 and at Polymer Processing group in 2018.

During her Barchelor Project, she carried out the synthesis of non-isocyanate polyurethanes (NIPUs) using isosorbide derivatives, under the supervision of Dr. Lourdes Irusta and Dr. Alba Gonzalez.

After her bachelor, she did a summer internship at Polymer Processing group where she worked on the formulation of thermoplastic elastomeric materials and the optimization of their mechanical properties.

In her master thesis, also conducted at Polymers Processing group, she developed PLA, PMMA and PEO based blends focusing on the relationship between composition, processing and properties.

Research

Currently, she is doing her PhD at Polymer Processing and Advanced Multiphasic Polymers (AMP) groups under the supervision of Dr. Guerrica-Echevarría and Dr. Alejandro Müller. Her research is focused on the design and characterization of multiphasic polymer blends based on PLA and other biopolymers. In order to enhance the final mechanical and thermal properties of these blends, she is studying different strategies to improve the crystallinity of PLA and the compatibility between the polymeric phases.

Biography

Lidia Orduña Velasco obtained her BSc in Chemistry with a mention in macromolecules in 2015 and her MSc in Chemistry and Polymers with a specialization in polymers, in 2016, from the University of Basque Country (UPV/EHU).

In her Bachelor project she synthesized and characterised clay-silver nanoparticle nanohybrids and, in her master thesis, she studied polyvinyl alcohol – modified clay nanocomposites; both carried out at the Polymer Science and Technology Department.

Research

Currently, she is doing her PhD at the Polymer Processing group (POLYMAT and Department of Polymers and Advanced Materials: Physics, Chemistry and Technology) under the supervision of Dr. Nora Aranburu and Dr. Gonzalo Guerrica-Echevarría. Her thesis focuses on the improvement and sustainability of epoxy/PCL materials, cured with ionic liquids. She also studies the use of ionic liquids in the compatibilization of thermoplastic blends and nanocomposites. She has extensive experience in the use of a wide number of processing equipment and characterization techniques.
