Control of cold atoms and confined gases:
Preparation of atom number states, new cooling methods, the atom diode (a laser device for unidirectional motion) and its applications, continuum atom laser, dynamics of TG gases
Quantum motion effects in atomic clocks and interferometry.
Time in quantum mechanics:
A long term goal is to understand time from the perspective of quantum mechanics. Along the years we have investigated how to integrate time observables into the quantum formalism: tunneling times, arrival times, dwell times, decay times.
Among the different realizations of the qubit and quantum information processing, trapped ions are the most developed and allow for fundamental studies under controllable conditions. They are also a promissing option for the next generation of atomic clocks. We investigate trapped ion dynamics at a fundamental level and for optimizing applications in metrology or quantum information.
