Description

This group develops research and teaching activities on Physical Anthropology, Human Biology and Genetic Epidemiology. Over the years the research of this group has focused on various aspects of the biology of 1) contemporary human populations and 2) populations of the past: 1) growth and development, assessment of nutritional status throughout the life cycle, secular trends, analysis of sexual dimorphism in evolutionary perspective and heritability of anthropological phenotypes with biomedical interest; 2) analysis of intra- and inter-population genetic heterogeneity of our species, its quantification and analysis of the effects of both population and interbreeding processes on such heterogeneity.

Research lines

  1. Analysis of body composition and its variability throughout the life cycle.
  2. Quantitative genetic studies on body size, shape and composition, based on complex families and twins.
  3. Epidemiological studies on genetic and environmental risk factors in the etiology of obesity, hypertension and other cardiometabolism-related phenotypes.
  4. Genetic heterogeneity and population processes in human populations.
  5. Evolutionary implications of the Demographic Transition.
