Description

Consolidated multidisciplinary research group active since 2005.
The group is formed by specialists in Stratigraphy, Sedimentology, Vertebrate and Invertebrate Paleontology, Micropaleontology and Mineralogy, most of them with more than 20 years of postdoctoral research experience.
The research activities focuson the Cretaceous and the lower-middle Cenozoic sedimentary successions from different sedimentary basins of the Iberian Peninsula (Pyrenees, Betic mountain range, Ebro Basin).
Research is funded through grants from competitive calls (Projects Plan I + D + I Ministry of Science and Innovation) and with research projects and contracts financed by various public and private institutions.

Lines of Research

The group develops 4 main lines of research:

  1. PALEOCLIMATIC AND PALEOCEANOGRAPHIC RECORD. Events and global climate change phases in marine and continental contexts. Cyclostratigraphy and applications to the refinement of chronological scales and the evolution of the current terrestrial geo-biosphere.
  2. SEDIMENTATION AND DIAGENESIS MODELS. Sedimentary patterns and systems during greenhouse climate periods, influence of sin-sedimentary tectonics on the architecture and evolution of depositional systems, and relative sea-level changes record in different sedimentary settings. Conceptual and numerical models and their application to the exploration and exploitation of resources. Organization and teaching of training courses for professionals.
  3. MARINE AND CONTINENTAL ECOSYSTEMS STRUCTURE AND PALEOECOLOGY. Communities of marine and terrestrial fossil organisms that characterized the Cretaceous and Cenozoic. Extinction and recovery events. Hyperthermal and anoxic events record in marine and terrestrial ecosystems.
  4. GEOLOGICAL HERITAGE AND GEODIVERSITY. Cataloging of geological elements of special protection or heritage interest, applied to the management of protected spaces and divulgation of scientific content to society.
