In this article I discuss two instances of V-doubling in Basque which display a dialectal distribution: (1) synthetic V-doubling in V-focalization contexts and (2) generalised V-doubling in V-topicalization contexts. The former is found in the western dialect, whereas the latter is used across dialects. Drawing from the fact that V-focalization induces all sorts of island effects, whereas V-topicalization is only sensitive to adjunct islands, I propose that movement is only involved in V-focalization, but not in V-topicalization. In addition, a parametric approach to doubling is presented, in terms of the option of splitting features to be checked on different copies, which seeks to shed some light on the reasons for the dialectal distribution of V-doubling in Basque.
