MSc. Thesis Description

The main aim of the project is to develop a first approach to the planning parametres and procedures that should be taken into account when planning future television services to fixed and mobile receivers, using the standard draft DVB-T2.

This technology is under standardization process at the ETSI at the time of developing this project and will be the key to High Definition Television in Europe. The system commercial requirements prior to the planning itself are presented and discussed as a part of this work.

The necessary bitrates associated to each service scenario is presented and a set of DVB-T2 candidate modes are proposed. A first approach to the minimum required field strength values is also provided.

Study of methodology on the planning of DVB-T2`s networks 

 

MSc. Thesis Description

This project presents the first planning parameters and procedures that should be taken into account when planning future television services to fixed and mobile receivers, using the standard DVB-T2.

The modes of configuration are calculated once the possible scenes to study are defined: first and second ones with services for fixed reception and the third one with services for mobile receivers. The necessary bitrates associated to each service scenario are presented and a set of DVB-T2 candidate modes are proposed.

In addition, the possible architectures of network are studied, so national, regional and local network schemes are described establishing the differences between DVB-T2 and its predecessor, DVB-T. Also, the link budget is calculated according to the reception mode and considering also the field strength estimation algorithm choice.

Finally, a first approach to the calculation of the minimum required protection ratio values is also provided in this project.

Study of the interferences for planning broadcasting DRM 26 MHz  services for a period of sporadic ionospheric propagation 

 

MSc. Thesis Description

This project is focused on the description of the behaviour of the 26 MHz band for a local broadcast service of DRM signal in months when is possible the mechanism of sporadic ionospheric propagation.

A measurement campaign is carried out, monitoring for three months frequencies of this band. For this measurements, a complete system of reception is designed with the necessary equipment, including a DRM receptor and a spectrum analyzer, so that they can provide enough information to create a results database for this study.

With the analysis of this database, the study provides a methodology in the classification of the interferences detected in this band, just as the definition of the main characteristics and behaviours associate to each of them, with an particular analysis of the DRM signal received with this mechanism of propagation from remote transmitters in Europe.

Iñigo CASCÓN 

Iñigo Cascón received the M.S. Degree in Telecommunications Engineering from the Bilbao Engineering College, University of the Basque Country (Spain), in 2010. He joined the TSR (Radiocommunications and Signal Processing) research group at the Department of Electronics and Telecommunications of the UPV/EHU in 2008.

Since having finished his degree, Iñigo has been employed in TSR as a contracted engineer for specific projects. Nowadays, his work is focused on the development of a software tool that characterizes the impact of wind farms on telecommunication services in order to evaluate their potential impact on these services before their installation. His research interests are focused on propagation and digital broadcasting.

He is currently working for Acces Partnership in England.
