Open Spaces: a new concept for Collaborative STEAM

Makerspaces and Fab-Labs are among the most popular solutions used to integrate STEAM in the curriculum of educational institutions. These require the acquisition of technological infrastructures, instruments, and tools (hardware and software.) They also require the specialized training of teachers in the use of the new equipment. Are there alternatives to these costly solutions? In this paper we propose a new paradigm for the rapid and inexpensive integration of STEAM in the education of our young students. Our proposal offers an economically sustainable model that overcomes the limitations of the traditional alternatives. It provides a prototype easily replicable in schools and universities, that can be tailored to suit individual educational needs and goals, regardless of financial means and demographics.The proposal is based on three methodological strategies: 1) Creation of a pedagogical framework for the design of collaborative STEAM art installations; 2) Design and planning of activities for the implementation of collaborative art installations; and 3) Management and execution of the activities with evaluation of results. The methodology used is applied to a new makerspace

model that aims to overcome the limitations of the traditional makerspace. We call this new

model Open Space. This name, Open Space, refers to the fact that the collaborative activities will not be implemented in a predefined laboratory, but rather in an existing public space that does not require the traditional equipment of a laboratory. The word space in Open Space refers to the location with the resources for the development of a specific educational goal. In our case, the goal was to design and build a collaborative art installation that reifies several STEAM concepts. We highlight the open nature of Open Spaces by emphasizing the goal of integrating any of the STEAM areas, and not being limited to a specific area that is determined by the instrumentation and equipment of a traditional makerspace. In addition, the word Open refers to the philosophy open to new formats, techniques, and materials for the realization of the artistic work, open to all students and teachers in a school, regardless

of their educational background. At the School of Education of the University of the Basque

Country, Spain, 63 students implemented a collaborative art installation called Glass Drawing 2021 Havana. The students demonstrated in this experience their ability to learn the techniques for the construction of art installations and their ability to integrate fundamental ideas of STEAM. The work Glass Drawing 2021 Havana was implemented collaboratively by 20 teams of 3-4 people, and was created in a public space, a study hall, at the university. The study hall is located on the ground floor of the school building, adjacent to the main entrance. It contains a large glass wall overlooking the gardens surrounding the main building. The glass wall contains a total of 10 glass panels; each panel has dimensions of 185 cm wide and 245 cm high. The students who created the art installation are being recognized by their friends and professors for their ability to join forces in creating a great project that has become part of the university´s architecture.
