Overview

The Department of Graphic Design and Engineering Projects carries out research on different topics related to its knowledge areas: Industrial Design, Ecodesign, Computational Geometry, Rapid Prototyping Techniques, Optical Techniques for the acquisition of Geometry, Dimensional Verification (GD&T), Reverse Engineering, Product Life Cycle Management, and Project Management.

These research projects take the form of doctoral theses, journal publications and patents. Many of the research projects are applied in collaboration with groups and companies of our industrial environment.

The Product Design Laboratory is a research group with a profitable development in basic research and technology transference to companies with high technological value products. For this purpose, the laboratory is equipped with the latest generation of software and industrial machinery for experimental testing, inspection, and research in the fields of Reverse Engineering and Ecodesign/Life Cycle Thinking.

DEHI (Dental Engineering - Hortz Ingeniaritza) is a research group of the Department of Graphic Design and Engineering Projects of the University of the Basque Country located in the section of Donostia at the Faculty of Engineering in Gipuzkoa. As its name suggests, this research group aims to integrate engineering into dentistry. For this purpose, the research group is developing different virtual processes to improve the dental digital workflow. Among them, reverse engineering has the greatest weight and its integration into dentistry is the way forward.

Life Cycle Thinking Grop. In comparison with the traditional focus on the production step, life cycle thinking aims at understanding the environmental, economic and social impacts of a product or service over its entire life cycle, i.e. from the raw materials extraction to its ultimate disposal (passing through manufacturing, distribution, use and recycling). In this framework, our work is devoted to the determination and understanding of the environmental impacts through the entire life cycle of diverse materials, processes and technologies. The information resulting from these studies helps to identify the environmental hotspots during the entire life cycle, allowing a conscious choice of preferable solutions towards sustainability. Using holistic methodologies such as life cycle assessment (LCA), we provide cues towards the design of novel alternatives with reduced environmental impact. Our research areas include novel energy storage systems, plastic sustainability, biomimicry & bioeconomy, recycling & upcycling, energy footprint analysis and circular economy studies.

TECH4PM Technology for Project Management. The main objective of TECH4PM is to promote and develop research on the application of technologies for the improvement of Project Management practice. Project Management is a discipline with a large component of technical skills and people behaviour management. TECH4PM looks for technologies that help in their performance and investigates the impact they have on sustainability. Our main research lines focus on: Artificial Intelligence applied to Project Management, The impact of Project Management on Sustainability and Circular Economy, and Measuring value in research and technological development projects.

eMERG multidisciplinar group. Part of the group's research is developed in the Department of Graphic Design and Engineering Projects. 2D and 3D microstructural characterization is carried out. Part of this characterization is performed by microscopy, which is used to carry out 3D reconstructions of the microstructures. Geometric models are generated in programs such as AutoCAD or SolidEdge, which facilitate the understanding of the behaviour of the materials and/or the simulation of future properties of them.
