She is a journalist and professor of the Journalism Department at the University of Basque Country/Euskal Herriko Unibertsitatea (UPV/EHU). She has a PhD in Information Sciences (1992) and she is Full Professor. In her activity prior to teaching, she worked at the Radio Stations: “Cadena SER”, “Radio Popular de Bilbao”, “Radio Euskadi-EITB” and was a talk show member in the program: ‘Escrito en el aire’ (“Written in the air”) of the “RNE-País Vasco” (Basque Country Public Radio), where she worked in management positions and the preparation of news, culture and entertainment programs. She currently maintains three main lines of investigation: ‘Comunicación y Salud’ (“Communication and Health”) ‘Nuevas narrativas periodísticas’ (“New journalist narratives”) and ’Libertad de prensa y Seguridad de los/as periodistas’ (“Freedom of the Press and Safety of male/female journalists”).

Carmen Peñafiel is a person with a long career in University management: she was a member of the Governing Council of the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU) for four years; in the University Cloister during six years; she was Director of the Journalism Department for almost seven years; she was a member of the Faculty Board of Social Sciences and Communication. She served on the Commission that carried out the Public Offer of Employment (OPE) of the Basque Radio Television-EITB between 2010-11. She is currently the Director of the Doctorate (PhD) Program in Social Communication at UPV/EHU; Coordinator of the University Degree in Journalism; and a member of the Permanent Committee of the Doctorate (PhD) School at the University of Basque Country (UPV/EHU). She has been an Academic evaluator in the Social Sciences sector at ANECA; Research projects in ANEP; and member of the Professor Accreditation Committee for the positions of Doctoral Assistant, Hired Doctoral Professor, and Hired Professor of the Private University in the Quality Agency of Castilla y León (ACSUCyL); also a member of the Evaluation Experts Committee in the Six-Year Transfer programof the 2018 summons.

She has participated in 26 research projects, where she was the main researcher in 13, one of them was a European Project corresponding to the 6th Framework Program of the European Union, in which she was the responsible partner for UPV/EHU. She is the Vice-President of the Management Board of the Spanish Association of Communication Research (AE-IC) where she has held management positions since 2008 and is a member of the Scientific Committee of the Groupe d’Études sur la Radiodifusion (GRER). She was founder of the IREN Research Group - International Radio Research Network and the responsible partner for UPV/EHU jointly with 10 countries from the European Union. Among her quality indexes, we highlight over 620 citations in Google Scholar, with an h index: 15, i10 index: 25 She has 5 Six-year programs recognised by CNEAI and 6 Five-year teaching programs.

She has carried out stays in the USA as guest researcher in: University of Nevada (2008); Basque Studies Center-Reno (2008); and in the prestigious University of California-San Diego-UCSD (2011), as well as other teaching innovation stays at the Institut for Informasjons og Medievitenskap-Bergen, Norway (2007) and at the TEC of the Monterrey-Campus de Toluca (Mexico) (2001 and 2006), among other merits of international mobility. She has supervised 6 doctoral theses in the last 10 years, three with International Mention. She is currently the mainresearcher of the Consolidated HGH Group (Media, Society & Education / Hedabideak, Gizartea eta Hezkuntza), an Official Group recognised by UPV/EHU. She is also the main researcher for the project: “Cartografía del Periodismo reposado/lento (Slow Journalism) digital en español: Recopilatorio de prácticas innovadoras y de calidad (“Cartography of slow digital journalism (Slow Journalism) in Spanish: Compilation of innovative and quality practices”,financed by the Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness (MINECO) whose Reference is CSO 2016-76020-R (AEI/FEDER, UE).

Carmen Peñafiel is the mother of two daughters who have finished their university studies: Nerea in Veterinary Medicine (Autonomous University of Barcelona) and Izaskun in Nursing (University of Basque Country (UPV)/Euskal Herriko Unibertsitatea). She devotes her free time to enjoying life, travelling with her family, reading, along with hobbies such as photography and painting.
