The Doctoral programme in Sciences of Antiquity is an interuniversity programme offered by the University of Cantabria and the University of the Basque Country / Euskal Herriko Unibertsitatea (UPV/EHU), and coordinated by the UPV/EHU.

It is a multidisciplinary programme with teaching staff from different areas of knowledge, such as: Archaeology (Cantabria and UPV/EHU), Roman Law (Cantabria and UPV/EHU), Greek Philology (UPV/EHU), Latin Philology (Cantabria, UPV/EHU), Ancient History (University of Cantabria, UPV/EHU and University of León) and Indo-European Linguistics (UPV/EHU).

The research groups working in this programme cover a very wide range of areas of research into the ancient world, from politics, religion, society, law, archaeology, economics, language, literature, classical tradition, etc. These objectives can benefit from greater interaction and synergy, as dealing with complementary topics for the same historical period encourages an exchange of knowledge and allows for comparison within a broad time frame.

The programme has a notable international dimension, as it has jointly-supervised agreements with the Paris I Pantheon-Sorbonne University and the University of Warsaw, with several doctoral mobility agreements in place with the universities of Bordeaux, Toulouse and Genoa, as well as having researchers teaching on the programme from the universities of Paris I, Lisbon, Trinity College Dublin, and from others that are still being incorporated.

Furthermore, the teachers and groups in the programme maintain continual international relations through the projects they are heading, through the conferences, seminars and scientific meetings they organise, and by participating in projects and scientific meetings and conferences organised by members of the universities and research centres in France, Italy, Germany, UK, etc.
