Profile for admission
Anyone, whether a Spanish or a foreign student, who has completed a Degree or similar qualification, and a Master's degree in History or in any other area of Arts and Humanities or comparable Social Sciences may access the Doctoral Programme in Europe and the Atlantic World: Power, Culture and Society.
The recommended profile for admission is of a post-graduate student who has a Master's degree in History, History of Art or Archaeology, and who is interested in developing advanced historical research in the areas of Mediaeval and Modern History, History of America, History of Art or Archaeology.
Candidates who wish to obtain an international doctorate should ideally have a good level of English (B2 or equivalent) or another foreign language. In the case of non-Spanish-speaking students, they should ideally have a level B2 or equivalent in Spanish.
In the case of those candidates that do not fulfill the requirements of admission because they hold a degree or MA whose program does not include sufficient content on historical research, the Academic Comission of the Ph.D. program could decide to ask them to perform a complementary training program, taking into account his/her previous experience and academic background. Just in case this complementary training is considered to be necessary, it will be composed of 20 ECTS credits from the courses of the Inter-University Master in History "Europe and the Atlantic World: Power, Culture and Society", jointly implemented by the Universities of Valladolid (Spain) and Nantes (France) along with this University of the Basque Country. These 20 credits will prefereably correspond to the following courses: Archives and Historical Research (5 ECTS credits), Current Trends in Historical Research (5 ECTS credits), Historical Research and Social Sciences (5 ECTS credits), Analysis of Historical Documents (5 ECTS credits). Those who are in possession of the capacities and knowledge established in the recommended profile of candidates can access into the Ph.D. program, despite the University they have obtained their MA degree in History or similar fields with the number of credits requiered by the current legislation. The Inter-University Academic Commission of the Ph.D. Program will ultimately decide on the admision of every candidate.

Procedure for assigning a faculty member as a doctoral thesis tutor and director
Once a student has been accepted onto the doctoral programme, the Academic Commission will assign them a tutor from among the faculty at the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU) participating in the programme, who will then be responsible for ensuring good interaction with the Academic Commission and adapting the training and research activities to the principles established by the programme and the Doctorate School.
Within three months of enrolment, the Academic Commission will assign each student a thesis director from among the faculty participating in the programme. The director may or may or not be the same person as the tutor, and will be responsible for guiding and ensuring the consistency of the training and research tasks, and guaranteeing that the topic of the thesis have an impact and make a novel contribution to the field. They are also responsible for guiding the thesis plan and adapting it, if required, to other projects and activities in which the PhD student is involved.
If the director is not a member of the faculty at the UPV/EHU, the tutor will act as a liaison.
Doctoral theses may also be co-directed, and the second co-director may or may not be a member of the DP. New tutors or directors may be assigned at any moment during the thesis.
