One of the main objectives of the UPV/EHU Doctoral Programme in Comparative Literature and Literary Studies is for students to further their studies of literature in general, and of national literature in particular, while bearing in mind supranational and comparative perspectives. In this sense, the participation of four different departments (Hispanic and Romance Philology and the Theory of Literature, English and German Philology, Classical Studies and Linguistics and Basque Studies) facilitates the design of a wide range of lines of research: Basque Literature, Hispanic and Latin American Literature, Greek Literature, Latin Literature, English Literature, German Literature, Literary Theory, Comparative Literature, Cultural Studies and Gender Studies.

The Doctoral Programme in Comparative Literature and Literary Studies extends the extensive educational experience of previous doctoral programmes. It incorporates proven experience in the use of teaching and research skills in the areas of knowledge included in said programme. This use has resulted in the joint organisation of a Master's Degree in Comparative Literature and Literary Studies which, in recent years and until now with increasing success, has formed a fundamental means of access to the Doctoral Programme.
