Profile for admission
Access to the doctoral programme in Molecular Biology and Biomedicine will be given to candidates who have graduated in the following subjects: Biology, Biochemistry, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Biotechnology, Chemistry, Pharmacy, Medicine, Biomedicine or Veterinary Studies. Furthermore, candidates who are qualified in the areas of experimental sciences and health sciences or with similar qualifications must have completed a master’s degree focused on research into biosciences and biomedicine or similar, where they will have acquired the necessary abilities, skills and knowledge to be able to join one of the five research teams in this Doctoral Programme.
For other qualifications, the doctoral programme's Academic Commission will study each student's profile for admission and will decide whether they need to complete specific additional training or not. This training will be acquired by completing between 5 and 15 ECTS credits for subjects on the official master’s degree offered at the UPV/EHU in Molecular Biology and Biomedicine.
The training will be acquired by means of the obtaining of 5 to 15 ECTS credits in subjects of the official master's degree offered by the UPV/EHU in Molecular Biology and Biomedicine for which students will enrol, advised by their tutors or thesis directors, once they have enrolled on the doctoral program, with the approval of the Academic Commission. The subjects to be completed for the master's degree, as supplementary training, include the following:
1. Workshop in Molecular Biology
2. Foundations of Genomics, Proteomics and Bioinformatics
3. Cellular and Molecular Biology of Membranes
4. Molecular and Cellular Bases of Liporegulation
5. Molecular Bases of Proliferation, Differentiation and Cell Death
All of them are subjects with 5 ECTS credits and are taught in the master's degree in Molecular Biology and Biomedicine of the UPV/EHU. The content, learning results and evaluation systems are included on the master's degree website.

The Academic Commission of the Doctoral Program will ultimately rule on the admission of candidates to the program. The applications will be prioritised, based on the evaluation of the following criteria:
1. Academic record (including the master's degree) (50%).
2. Personal interview (aspects to be valued: motivation, interest, initiative, attitude, oral expression) (20%).
3. Suitability of the profile for the doctoral program (15%).
4. Knowledge of English, accredited with official certificates (10%).
5. Prior research experience (5%).
There must be proof of any cited merits. During the interview, candidates must declare whether they will be available as students on a full-time or part-time basis. Students should be able to understand oral presentations and works of a scientific nature written in English, have good reading comprehension skills in the language and a basic level of verbal and written expression.
The Academic Commission of the Doctoral Program will ultimately rule on the admission of candidates to the program.
Aspirants to the doctoral program with special educational needs arising from disabilities should initially address the coordinator of the doctoral program to inform him or her.
They should also contact the Care Service for People with Disabilities through the channels established on the website at http://www.ikasleak.ehu.es/p202-shdischm/es/ so that the latter can solve the specific needs of the candidates, offering information, advice and guidance.

Procedure for assigning a faculty member as a doctoral thesis tutor and director
Once a student has been accepted onto the doctoral programme, the Academic Commission will assign them a tutor from among the faculty at the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU) participating in the programme, who will then be responsible for ensuring good interaction with the Academic Commission and adapting the training and research activities to the principles established by the programme and the Doctorate School.
Within three months of enrolment, the Academic Commission will assign each student a thesis director from among the faculty participating in the programme. The director may or may or not be the same person as the tutor, and will be responsible for guiding and ensuring the consistency of the training and research tasks, and guaranteeing that the topic of the thesis have an impact and make a novel contribution to the field. They are also responsible for guiding the thesis plan and adapting it, if required, to other projects and activities in which the PhD student is involved.
If the director is not a member of the faculty at the UPV/EHU, the tutor will act as a liaison.
Doctoral theses may also be co-directed, and the second co-director may or may not be a member of the DP. New tutors or directors may be assigned at any moment during the thesis.
