Admission criteria

Profile for admission

Students who have studied and passed the Master's degree in Economics: Tools of Economic Analysis, at the University of Oviedo, University of Cantabria or the UPV/EHU, or other equivalent official master's degrees at Spanish or foreign universities with similar subject matter. Other profiles for admission include: students with a master's qualification in any of the sciences (physics, exact sciences, chemistry), engineering or other fields, providing that they can show they have knowledge of Microeconomics, Macroeconomics and Econometrics.

In any case, candidates who wish to enrol on the Doctorate in Economics: Tools of Economic Analysis must show:

- A consolidated capacity to read and understand scientific text, as well as a capacity for coherent and articulate writing, and an ability to deal with concepts.

- An ability to read and write in English (level B2 according to the Common European Framework for Languages).

- A capacity to prepare critical and original research on economic issues in general.

- Skills in the area of theoretical reflection and an interest and ability to understand specific economic and social problems.

- An ability to handle statistical-econometric methods and knowledge of the sources of statistical data that enable them to verify economic theories.

- An interest in one or more of the lines of research covered in the programme.

This program does not establish any specific supplementary training.
The Academic Committee of the Doctorate, having viewed the student's CV, will decide whether to admit him or her, bearing in mind the CV and academic record in accordance with the established evaluation criteria. The Academic Committee may also request letters of reference and a personal interview with the interested party in order to decide on admission. Applications for admission from candidates with foreign degrees from countries outside the EHEA will be forwarded by the Academic Committee of the Doctoral Program to the competent authority for final approval. Admission to the doctoral studies will entail assignment to one of the lines of research envisaged in the program and the allocation of a tutor. Procedure for assigning a faculty member as a doctoral thesis tutor and director

Once a student has been accepted onto the doctoral programme, the Academic Commission will assign them a tutor from among the faculty at the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU) participating in the programme, who will then be responsible for ensuring good interaction with the Academic Commission and adapting the training and research activities to the principles established by the programme and the Doctorate School.

Within three months of enrolment, the Academic Commission will assign each student a thesis director from among the faculty participating in the programme. The director may or may or not be the same person as the tutor, and will be responsible for guiding and ensuring the consistency of the training and research tasks, and guaranteeing that the topic of the thesis have an impact and make a novel contribution to the field. They are also responsible for guiding the thesis plan and adapting it, if required, to other projects and activities in which the PhD student is involved.  

If the director is not a member of the faculty at the UPV/EHU, the tutor will act as a liaison.

Doctoral theses may also be co-directed, and the second co-director may or may not be a member of the DP.  New tutors or directors may be assigned at any moment during the thesis.
