Material resources

The doctoral program in Development Studies has work spaces at the Hegoa Institute, where there is also a documentation centre. Similarly, the Gezki Institute and the Civersity research group have work spaces which can be used by the students on the program.
In principle, given the kind of doctoral program, the Program in Development Studies does not need to use laboratories, workshops or experimental spaces.
In addition to the general library system of the UPV/EHU and its facilities and classrooms, the students of the Doctoral Program in Development Studies have their own library infrastructure, specializing in the subject. We refer to the documentation centre at the Hegoa Institute, which has the following characteristics:- It has more than 19,000 bibliographical records of books, reference works, journal articles and grey literature, which include the bibliographical heritage of the documentation centre specializing in International Cooperation and Development since 1988. The whole collection is classified and controlled by means of its own dictionary or thesaurus, with 1,200 keywords which facilitate the retrieval and exchange of information on subjects such as human and sustainable development, cooperation and financing of development, local development, international economic relations, gender and development, poverty and inequality, migration, culture and development, etc.- It manages a newspaper library with 200 journals specializing in the same subjects.- The Centre implements a constant process for the innovation of the digital services. In particular, the Digital Library of the Institute controls the documentary heritage in an integrated online system which, according to its operating data, has become one of the reference Spanish databases in our speciality, with over 200,000 visits spread over 2011. In addition, the library has other support services such as the multimedia content service, the thematic information resource newsletter, the newspaper library newsletter, the catalogue of online magazines, including a summary of the contents of each collection, reference works available on-line at the CDOC, with access to the editing body, and newsletters with information for pre-defined users.- The professionals at the Documentation Centre have worked for over 20 years at the service of the university community, including the doctoral students, facilitating their bibliographical searches and the acquisition of the necessary documentation, in collaboration with the thesis directors.- The centre also has all the material resources for doctoral students to carry out their information and documentation work (reading room, photocopier, access to the digital library, etc.).- It maintains permanent links with other organisms specializing in documentation, including REDIAL (European Network of Information and Documentation on Latin America), SEDIC (Spanish Association for Documentation and Information), REEDES (Spanish Network of Development Studies), OCUD (Observatory of the University Development Cooperation) and EADI (European Association of Development Research and Training Institutes).- The documentation centre at the Hegoa Institute has received recognition for its contribution to research and debate in relation to international development and cooperation, not only from the UPV/EHU but also from other institutions, such as the Basque Government (Eusko Jaurlaritza), the Provincial Council of Bizkaia (Bizkaiko Foru Aldundia) and the Secretary of State for International Cooperation, which has been reflected in financial support.
