Profile for Admission
The proposed training programme endeavours to provide students with the necessary knowledge to take part in the technological development process in the areas of modern physics and their associated technologies. For this reason, it must consider scientific and technological subjects related to those areas, such that, before starting the doctoral programme, the students should already be trained either in areas of industrial activity, such as engineering or industrial technology, electricity, electronics, automation, systems, nuclear engineering, etc. or in the field of physics, such as solid state, electronic or nuclear, or even a combination in which the degree comes under one of the aforementioned options, and the master's degree comes under the other.
It is of great interest for the student's training on the programme if they have some knowledge of English, at least reading skills.
This program does not establish specific supplementary training. However, bearing in mind that access is open to graduates corresponding to graduate's degrees, with at least 300 ECTS credits, whose studies may not have included any specific content in research training, the academic committee of the program will consider the case of each student admitted, depending on the entry profile, which in any case must comply with the recommended profile, to decide whether there is a need to undergo this research training. The training will be acquired by means of the completion of between 6 and 15 ECTS credits in official master's degree subjects offered by the UPV/EHU in the areas of Engineering and Technology and Physics, Chemistry and Materials or in any other equivalent training in research skills, for which students will enrol, on the advice of their tutors or thesis directors, once they have enrolled on the doctoral program.
A criterion for admission to the doctoral program will be to have the following specific academic training: a) graduate's degrees in engineering (Industrial Technology, Electronics, Industrial Electronics and Automation, Computer Science, etc.) with a master's degree in Science or Engineering and/or b) graduate's degrees in Science (Physics, Mathematics or similar) with a master's degree in Science or Engineering.

Procedure for assigning a faculty member as a doctoral thesis tutor and director
Once a student has been accepted onto the doctoral programme, the Academic Commission will assign them a tutor from among the faculty at the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU) participating in the programme, who will then be responsible for ensuring good interaction with the Academic Commission and adapting the training and research activities to the principles established by the programme and the Doctorate School.
Within three months of enrolment, the Academic Commission will assign each student a thesis director from among the faculty participating in the programme. The director may or may or not be the same person as the tutor, and will be responsible for guiding and ensuring the consistency of the training and research tasks, and guaranteeing that the topic of the thesis have an impact and make a novel contribution to the field. They are also responsible for guiding the thesis plan and adapting it, if required, to other projects and activities in which the PhD student is involved.
If the director is not a member of the faculty at the UPV/EHU, the tutor will act as a liaison.
Doctoral theses may also be co-directed, and the second co-director may or may not be a member of the DP. New tutors or directors may be assigned at any moment during the thesis.
