Juan Luis Mañes obtained an Engineering's degree in 1977, followed in 1979 by a B. Sc. in Physics at the UPV/EHU. In 1980 he completed a Ph. D. Thesis on Landau's theory of phase transitions under the supervision of M. Tello, obtaining a Ph. D. degree in Engineering. In 1981 he went to the USA with a Fulbright Scholarship, obtaining a MSc. in Physics from Caltech in 1982 and a Ph. D. in Physics form U.C. Berkeley in 1986, where he worked on anomalies in Quantum Field Theories under the supervision of B. Zumino.

He has been an assistant professor at the UPV/EHU since 1986 and a full professor since 1995. Along the years he has taught a variety of subjects (Classical Mechanics, Mathematical Methods, Quantum Physics, Computational Methods, Many Body Theory, Group Theory and Solid State Physics). He has also spent some time doing research abroad. Concretely, two and a half years at Princeton U. with a Research Associate contract, working on string theory, and two years at the Theory division at CERN, on lower dimensional models of Quantum Gravity.

Currently he teaches “Solid State Physics II” (Physics degree) and “Advanced Quantum Mechanics” (Master in Quantum Science and Technology). His research is centered on QFT anomalies in relativistic hydrodynamics and topological materials.
