control of PDE theory numerics and applications

Control of PDE: Theory, Numerics, and Applications

Scope of the special session

There are ten speakers in the session. All the talks will deal with current and relevant issues in the topic.

Concerning optimal control, there are five talks. Two of the talks will address the second order analysis for optimal control problems, which is an essential tool in the stability analysis, in the proof of error estimates for the numerical approximations, and in the analysis of convergence rate of the numerical optimization algorithms. The other five talks will deal with exact controllability for distributed systems, integro-differential systems, and the study of observability inequalities. Applications to vibrations of beams and strings will be given. Three talks deal with the derivation of error estimates for the numerical discretization of optimal control problems. Sparsity of the optimal controls is another topic discussed in one of the talks, which is a very important issue in the applications. Among the five talks on optimal control, two of them consider applied optimal control problems: one is concerned with the control of Navier-Stokes systems and the other deals with the control of the FitzHugh-Nagumo system.
