Doctoral Programme in Chemical Engineering

Introduction

The main objective of the Doctoral Program in Chemical Engineering of the UPV/EHU is to train researchers who are able to promote innovation and technological advancement in the chemical industry and in related sectors such as environmental technology, energy, the food industry and pharmacology.

The Doctoral Program in Chemical Engineering has recently been adapted to Royal Decree 99 but it is a well-established doctoral program with a long history, producing an average number of 12 doctoral theses per year in the last two years and with a Mention towards Excellence since 2011, reference MEE2011-0151 (Resolution of 6 October 2011).

The analyses of labour demand in Chemical Engineering show a significant increase in the demand for doctors in technological centres and companies. Chemical products and materials in general required by society are undergoing continuous development and are being replaced by others with better characteristics. R&D is the main cause of this evolution. The chemical sector makes a significant investment in R&D in order to achieve higher-performance products which consume fewer resources and have a better quality/price ratio and/or lower environmental impact in order to improve or maintain strategic positions with regard to competitors.

The research and technological development activities developing knowledge which can be transferred to the productive sector and the innovation phase conducted more directly in companies require doctors in the area of Chemical Engineering who are able to identify the new transferable developments new and apply them to the company itself in order to benefit from them.

Qualification level

This qualification is recognised at level 4 in the Spanish Framework of Higher Education Qualifications (MECES) and corresponds to level 8 of the European Qualifications Framework (EQF), according to Royal Decree 22/2015 of 23rd January 2015 (BOE Spanish Official Gazette 07/02/2015).

Master

Master in Chemical Engineering

Introduction

This is an official interuniversity Master's Degree between the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU) and the University of Cantabria (UC). This Master's has been created as a continuation of the Master of Chemical Process Engineering and Sustainable Development from the University of the Basque Country, and the Master of Sustainable Production and Consumption from the University of Cantabria, both implemented in 2007. The Master of Chemical Engineering gathers the guidelines of the University General Secretariat from the 8 June 2009 about the Profession of the Chemical Engineer, and has a dual Professional/Research Orientation.

The Chemical Engineer is a versatile professional, qualified to work in a variaty of industrial, service, and administration sectors, and to perform a wide range of professional activities. The current society requires these types of professionals with a specific training in Chemical Engineering, capable of performing, improving, and optimizing processes, operating production plants, etc. in the Industry of Chemistry and Processes. Some of the areas in which they can develop their professional carreers are: process design and engineering, product production and engineering, R&D&I, management, or sales and marketing.

Qualification level

This qualification is recognised at level 3 in the Spanish Framework of Higher Education Qualifications (MECES) and corresponds to level 7 of the European Qualifications Framework (EQF), according to Royal Decree 22/2015 of 23rd January 2015 (BOE Spanish Official Gazette 07/02/2015).

This is a research-oriented master that can be considered the previous step to doctorate studies
