The Research Group in Social Determinants of Health and Demographic Change (Opik) is a multidisciplinary group composed of researchers from the fields of social sciences and health. Opik's main areas of activity are research, teaching and dissemination of knowledge regarding the social factors that influence the health of the population, the social inequalities in health and the policies that might modify these social determinants and thereby improve the health of the whole population.

The group has recently been recognised as a Research Group of the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU), and is composed mainly of teaching staff and researchers from the university. Other researchers from institutions such as the Department of Health of the Basque Regional Government and Osakidetza (the Basque Health Services) also collaborate with the group. We have a close collaborative relationship with groups and institutions at both state and international level.

Opik has led and is leading today numerous research projects related to the social determinants of health, social inequalities in health, Health in All Policies strategy, and the main aspects of demographic change, and participates in other projects about similar themes in collaboration with different networks and research groups. In addition to their research and university teaching activities, Opik is engaged in different activities aimed at the transfer and dissemination of the results of their research, both by means of collaborating on research projects with public administrations and social entities, and by organising activities of dissemination and taking part in ongoing training programmes for professionals or the general public.
