Research Lines

ADVANCED MATERIALS AND PROCESSES

Functional materials

The focus of this research line is to develop new materials using biobased resources available in the Basque Country and Nouvelle Aquitaine.  Several biobased materals such as lignin, chitin, chitosan, cellulose and hemicellulose in combination with bionanoparticules (nanocellulose, nonochitin, nanolignin…) and/or extractives from plants  can be used to develop new materials  can be used in different applications such: active food packaging, sensors, adsorbent materials, hydrogels, materials for energy storage, coatings…

Sustainable biorefinery

The main idea is to develop “Green” process that allow to convert in efficient way the biomass in wide range of products such building blocks, polymers and material that could substitute their counterpart produced from non-renewable resources.

ENERGY EFFICIENCY

Energy efficiency in industrial processes

  • The main focus is the application of process integration methods (pinch analysis), exergy analysis and life cycle analysis to optimize the energy consumption of continuous and batch industrial processes. Introduction of intermediate energy storage is one of relevant issue when dealing with batch processes. In addition the use of renewable energies (solar thermal energy, biomass) is also considered.

SUSTAINABLE MANUFACTURING

Optimization of biorefinery processes

  • One of the key issue for the implementation of biorefineries is the development of efficient process in term of energy and water consumptions. The main idea is to use tools of process integration combined with process simulation to design efficient processes. In addition, the use of process intensification technologies such microwave and ultrasound could contribute to the minimization of energy consumption and to the reduction of the environmental impacts of the designed process.

Cross-border Collaboration (if any)
