Karlos Sánchez Ekiza is tenured professor of music at the Faculty of Letters of the University of the Basque Country. Ethnomusicologist and practical musician (and award-winning composer and arranger at odd moments), his lines of research focus on Basque music, its imaginaries and its manifestations, and especially with regard to music and identity. He has been director of Trans, transcultural music magazine, vice president of the Iberian Society of Ethnomusicology and president of the Folklore Section of the Society for Basque Studies.

Among his publications, we can highlight the booksTxuntxuneroak: Narrativas, identidades e ideologías en la historia de los txistularis, Del danbolin al silbo: txistu, tamboril y danza vasca en la época de la Ilustración and Euskal Musika Klasikoa, commissioned by the Etxepare Institute. He is also the author of a good number of voices on dance for the Auñamendi Encyclopedia and some thirty articles in national and international publications focused on Basque music and dance issues, ranging from pre-nationalism imaginary to Basque participation in the Women's Section of Francoism or Basque radical rock.
