When I obtained my PhD in Geology (UPV/EHU, 1986) I assumed the teaching of Hydrogeology and the responsibility of the Research Group. The projects were limited to internal calls and were of strict Hydrogeology, especially karstic. Until 1995 I supervised 5 theses and that year I became a professor. From then on, I bet on Environmental Hydrology, as reflected in the 10 theses later supervised. The Group is now a reference in watershed dynamics, modelling, valorisation of karstic lands, in situ monitoring of processes... The publications of recent years are good examples.
This extension allowed us to have access to numerous contracts with the Basque administration (Water Agency, Government, Provincial Councils, Town Councils) and to European projects (5 projects since 2009, being me the PI of the UPV/EHU). I have been PI in 5 projects (1996-2017) of the National R&D&I Plan, and in 7 (2006-2016) of the Basque Government's R&D&I strategy referring to soil pollution and the impacts of climate change on water resources. I have also had development cooperation projects with the Basque Government (Cuba and Karakorum-Baltistan). The group of which I am PI (IT1029-16) has been recognised as Consolidated (Basque Government). Our commitment to transversality has led us to set up a Training and Research Unit (Global Change and Heritage) together with two other consolidated groups; we provide the hydrological vision within the framework of Global Change.
