Astrid Barona was awarded her M.Sc. Degree in Chemistry by the University of the Basque Country UPV/EHU in 1987 and her Ph. D. degree in 1994. She received the Distinguished Award for her doctoral thesis on remediation of soils contaminated with heavy metals.

She has conducted research projects on the biofiltration of waste gases and biomachining. These projects have been supported by national and international institutions and private companies. She has published more than 70 research papers in leading JCR journals within the area of Chemical and Environmental Engineering, and she has attended and presented her research work at more than 80 International Congresses worldwide. As a result of her research work, she is the co-owner of one national patent and one international patent related to the innovative use of waste solids as support materials for contaminant biodegradation.

She is currently serving as a professor in the Department of Chemical and Environmental Engineering in the Faculty of Engineering of Bilbao at the University of the Basque Country.

Apart from her position in the University, she serves as a technical consultant for Town Halls and other private and public institutions in matters concerning environmental engineering. Since 2000, she has also been an active referee for R+D projects for the State Agency for Research of the Spanish Government and assessor for the national accreditation process for the university staff.
