Graduate (1983) and Doctor in Medicine and Surgery (1987, with high honors) by the UPV/EHU. Professor of Microbiology at the Faculty of Medicine and Nursing of the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU) in Bilbao (since 2001). Head of the Department of Immunology, Microbiology and Parasitology (since 2017). Director of the Consolidated Research Group type A ‘Candidiasis and other human infections associated with microbial biofilms’ (GIC 15 78 IT 990-16) (since 2007). Director of the Revista Iberoamericana de Micología (since 1994). President of the Ibero-American Association of Medical Mycology (since 2019).
Author of more than 250 original manuscripts, reviews and books in Microbiology, Mycology and Infectious Diseases (since 1983). It has 5 research six-year terms (CNEAI). Qualified with the maximum category A2 -excellent- (UniBasq). h index of 33 (WOS ), 35 (Scopus) and 42 (Google academic). Director of 21 doctoral theses. Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Mycological Research Laboratory, Central Public Health Laboratory (London, 1988-1989). President of the Spanish Mycology Association (2008-2014). Member of the Committee on Ethics in Animal Experimentation of the UPV/EHU (2009-2015).
Collaborates in the radio programme La Mecánica del Caracol in Radio Euskadi (since 2011). His two science blogs are Mikrobios (Ehusfera) and Mikrosphera (SciLogs, Investigación y Ciencia).
