MU-E obtained her B.A. in Basque Philology in 1985 (UPV/EHU). Afterwards she completed an M.A. in Linguistics (U. of Connecticut, UCONN, 1992) and received a PhD degree in Linguistics (U. of Connecticut, 1994). She was a faculty in the Department of Linguistics, U. of California, Irvine (UCI), from 1994 to 1997. She joined the UPV/EHU in 1997 and is currently a faculty in the Department of Linguistics and Basque Studies. She has been a visiting scholar at the Massachusetts Institute of Techonology (MIT) (1993-1994), the U of Paris VIII (2005), and the CNRS (UMR 5478 Iker, 2009 and 2013).

She teaches at the Master’s Program in Theoretical and Experimental Linguistics as well as the Master’s Program in Basque Linguistics and Philology (UPV/EHU).

Her research focuses on syntax, the syntax-semantics/pragmatics interface and the architecture of grammar, from a cross-linguistic perspective. She has been the Principal Investigator of the Research Group in Theoretical Linguistics Hizkuntzalaritza Teorikorako Taldea, HiTT (Basque Government, 2007-2018; UPV/EHU 2019-2021), and the Formation and Research Unit UFI11/14. As P.I., she has led a total of 17 research projects and research nets, and has been member of another 12 national and international projects. Her work has been published in volumes of Springer, MIT Press, Oxford University Press, or John Benjamins, and in journals such as Natural Language and Linguistic Theory or Lingua, among others.
