M. A. Illarramendi is a doctor in Physics from the University of the Basque Country with distinction (outstanding PhD prize 1991), and since 1994, she is an associate professor in the Applied Physics I Department of the Engineering School of Bilbao. She currently teaches the subjects titled "Fisika" and "Óptica Aplicada a las Telecomunicaciones" in the Telecommunications Technology Engineering degree and the one titled "Interferometría Espacial" in the Spatial Science and Technology master's degree. She has directed multiple end-of-degree projects, both in degrees and in Master's degrees, and has published nine international academic works. She is a member of the "Applied Photonics Bilbao"

Investigation Group, where she is in charge of the area of studies of doped polymer optical fibers, composed of four PhD researchers and one PhD student. She has directed three PhD theses, and she is currently directing a fourth one. She is a collaborator with prestigious investigation centers such as the "Keio Photonics Research Institute" of Keio University in Japan, the "Technische Universität Braunschweig" of Germany and the "Instituto de Ciencia y Tecnología de Polímeros" of Madrid. M.A. Illarramendi has 4 acknowledged six-year terms of investigation and the full professor accreditation by the national quality evaluation and accreditation agency. Since February 2017, she is the Deputy Director of the Student Body in the School of Engineering of Bilbao.
