Fidel Liberal Malaina got his Telecommunications Engineering MSC and Phd in 2001 and 2005 (both from UPV/EHU).

His research is focused in next generation data networks and 5G, specially during emergencies.

Currently he is the Principal Investigator (PI) of the NQAS research group including 9 lecturers and 5 researchers. He has supervised 6 Phd. thesis and published more than 80 research articles in scientific journals and conferences, with more than 500 citations.

He has been involved in more than 50 research projects and contracts at Regional/National/International level, in 15 of them as PI.

He has co-founded two Spin-Offs (Captiva -2003- y Nemergent Solutions -2017-, focused on Mission Critical communications).

He has coordinated the whole GERYON European Project (2011-2015) and UPV/EHU participation in H2020 5G SESAME and ESSENCE projects.

From 2017 he is leading the MCOP project funded by USA DoC.

He has pushed UPV/EHU’s participation in most relevant standardization bodies (ITU-T, ETSI y 3GPP).

He is a well-recognized advocate of next generation emergency communications together with EENA, TCCA, PSCE... He has participated and technically coordinated NG112 and MCX ETSI Plugtests.

He has received several awards including ranked #1 of the XI Telecommunication Engineering class in Faculty of Engineering of Bilbao (2001), most innovative project for the Captiva Spin Off by COIIB (2003) and 2nd and 1st prize to best article in ITU Kaleidoskope 2009 y 2010.
