Carlos Martínez Gorriarán is a full professor of Aesthetics and Theories of the Arts since 1992 at the UPV-EHU. He is especially interested in the relationship between aesthetic phenomena, culture and human cognition. He has published numerous books and articles on this field, highlighting the biography of Jorge Oteiza Jorge Oteiza, hacedor de vacíos (Marcial Pons, Madrid 2011), and Estética de la diferencia. El arte vasco y el problema de la identidad, in co-authorship with Imanol Agirre Arriaga (Alberdania, Irún 1995). He has also worked on fiction literature in relation to the testimony of totalitarianism (the Kolymá stories of Verlam Shalomov), on the theory of metaphor, on the phenomena of aesthetic experience, and lately on cognitive aesthetics, in particular on the role of poetics in the formation of conjectures, in the line of C.S.Peirce, and in the constitution of political communities in classical Greek culture, and on the peculiarities of the evolution of art in cultural evolution.



At present he directs doctoral research on self-portraiture in photography, the identity metaphors of the European Union, and on the philosophical challenges of the AI.



Has participated in the fight against ETA and for human rights as co-founder of the Forum of Ermua and Basta Ya, of which he was a co-speaker (Shajarov Prize 2000 European Parliament). Deputy for UPyD in the Congress of Deputies between 2011 and 2016. In 2017 he returns to the university.
