Dr. Maria Blanco Rey is a permanent researcher of the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU) and research associate at the Donostia International Physics Center (DIPC) in San Sebastian (Spain). Maria obtained her PhD in 2006 at the Autonomous University of Madrid (UAM), with a thesis on the development of theoretical tools to analyse low-energy electron diffraction on surfaces. This work was carried out at the Materials Science Institute of Madrid (ICMM, CSIC). Maria joined the Department of Chemistry of the University of Cambridge (UK) from 2007 to 2010, where she worked on catalytic properties of palladium oxide surfaces and chiral surface structures. During this postdoctoral stay, DFT modelling of solids and surfaces became her main research area. After a two-year period as a research fellow at the DIPC, Maria obtained the position at the UPV/EHU, where she is involved in teaching, too, at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Her research activities in Donostia have covered gas-solid interface dynamics, modelling of molecule manipulation with STM and, more recently, various aspects of magnetism in surfaces and low-dimensional systems in close collaboration with experimental groups. In particular, she is interested in the magnetic properties that originate from the spin-orbit interaction.
