María-José Gutiérrez is Professor of Economics at the University of the Basque Country (UPV-EHU). She holds a Ph.D. from the State University of New York at Stony Brook and a B.A. in Economics from UPV-EHU. She has taught Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, Natural Resource Economics, Monetary Economics and Math for economists. She was Visiting Professor at the University of Warwick, University of California San Diego and Kansas State University.



Professor Gutiérrez has contributed to the study of natural resources management and the macroeconomic modeling of environmental economics. Her research has been published in journals such as Journal of Environmental Economics and Management, Environmental Resource Economics, Journal of Economic Dynamics and Control, Journal of Public Economic Theory, Journal of Applied Economics, International Tax and Public Finance, Journal of Institutional and Theoretical Economics, ICES Journal of Marine Sciences, Sustainability, Ocean & Coastal Management, Scientia Marina, Fisheries Research and Regional Environmental Change.

Professor Gutiérrez is Head of the Department of Economics (ANEKO) at the University of the Basque Country and member of ANECA Assessment Committee for university studies (VERIFICA Program).
