The Ikerbasque research Prof. Mario Piris Silvera leads the development of theoretical methods in the Theoretical Chemistry group of the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU). He obtained his masters in physical sciences and mathematics at the Moscow State University M. V. Lomonosov, Russia, in 1988. That year, he began to work as a professor of physics-mathematics at the University of Havana, Cuba. The first 15 years of his scientific career were mainly devoted to university education. During this period he held administrative positions as head of the Department and defended his doctoral thesis in Physics in 1997. For the past 15 years, Prof. Piris has devoted exclusively to scientific research in the field of quantum chemistry. He has published a total of 96 scientific articles in peer-reviewed journals and 3 book chapters. 80% of its publications correspond to this last period of ten years. He has presented the results of his scientific work in 60 international conferences, of which 37 have been invited to conferences. He has also participated in 16 research projects, of which he has been the principal investigator in 6 of them, and a research project leader in 8. He has developed three software packages called PNOFID (2009), DoNOF (2013), and DoNOF (2017). These are computational chemistry software programs based on the natural orbital functional theory.
