Profile for admission
This doctoral programme is particularly recommended for people who have completed master's degree level studies in subjects related to the physics of matter, nanoscience and/or the science of materials. This opens up the possibility for students who have completed a degree in any of the experimental sciences or certain engineering degrees to join this doctoral programme.
There are no specific complementary training modules for the course. However, considering graduates with either Bachelor¿s or higher degrees may choose to study the course (all of whom must have at least 300 ECTS credits, but whose studies may not have included specific training in research), students applying may or may not be required to pursue training in research competence. This decision will be made by the Programme¿s Academic Committee, based on their entry profile. This training will entail between 6 and 15 ECTS credits in subject modules from the official Master¿s course in Nanoscience offered by UPV/EHU. Students are required (with support from their tutor or thesis supervisor) to enrol on the course once they have been registered on the Doctoral Programme.
- Degree: Suitability (50%)- Transcript: Students must provide their academic transcript (30%)- Others: Interview, if necessary due to the number of applicants or the student¿s prior training (20%)The suitability of the degree will be assessed by examining whether the studies the student has completed in the past are in a similar vein to those in the corresponding section of the required entry profile. Similarly, the academic transcript will be assessed based on objective criteria, examining the grades obtained by the student in different subjects and examinations passed, with particular emphasis on the subjects most relevant to the theme of the doctoral programme.Competence in the English language will also be assessed, through official certifications achieved, or through activities carried out in the language with documentation duly provided. In cases where it is deemed necessary to carry out an interview, the student¿s levels of motivation and commitment will also be assessed.

Procedure for assigning a faculty member as a doctoral thesis tutor and director
Once a student has been accepted onto the doctoral programme, the Academic Commission will assign them a tutor from among the faculty at the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU) participating in the programme, who will then be responsible for ensuring good interaction with the Academic Commission and adapting the training and research activities to the principles established by the programme and the Doctorate School.
Within three months of enrolment, the Academic Commission will assign each student a thesis director from among the faculty participating in the programme. The director may or may or not be the same person as the tutor, and will be responsible for guiding and ensuring the consistency of the training and research tasks, and guaranteeing that the topic of the thesis have an impact and make a novel contribution to the field. They are also responsible for guiding the thesis plan and adapting it, if required, to other projects and activities in which the PhD student is involved.
If the director is not a member of the faculty at the UPV/EHU, the tutor will act as a liaison.
Doctoral theses may also be co-directed, and the second co-director may or may not be a member of the DP. New tutors or directors may be assigned at any moment during the thesis.
