Brief description: Sustainability is not limited to the materials with which items are made, it also embraces the various coatings that many of them rely on. This is why the sustainability in coatings looks at energy and resource conservation, waste minimisation or efficiency. It also involves the use of renewable and non-toxic products. In this context, the EU-funded LIGNICOAT project is exploring the use of lignin, which has a high potential in terms of cost and environmental benefits. Specifically, it will propose new synthetic routes to produce lignin-derived bioresins for coatings. The project’s overall aim is to demonstrate technical, economic and environmental viability.
