Reading group of Situation and Attitudes
(Barwise & Perry 1983)
Barwise and Perry's book Situations and Attitudes supposed a sift from possible worlds semantics to semantics that take parts of the world, situation semantics. We will study how they constructed a theory of situations that holds their external view on semantics. We will discuss about interesting topics such as the relation between meaning, world and mental states; how utterances carry information; or what meaning is. We will proceed by reading one chapter per week: each chapter will be comment by one participant and then we will discuss and clarify the main issues that we find. Sessions will be on Thursdays from 11:00 to 12:30.
