I'll argue that the notion of viewpoint plays central stage in our understanding and interpretation of many utterances. To do so I'll first explain the difference between the understanding of utterances containing indexicals and utterances containing other terms. This will help us to point out how and why the understanding of some utterances rests on the grasping of the point of view from which the utterance is made (roughly, the narrator viewpoint) or the point of view of some agents represented by the utterance.
