Description and contextualization of the subject

In the panorama of methodologies of literary analysis, the reader did not receive the attention he deserves as an integral element in literary communication until relatively recently. It was not even taken into consideration by Positivism, the History of Ideas, the different Immanentisms or materialist analysis, all of which were decisive trends in literary analysis until the second half of the 20th century. The Sociology of Literature began to deal with the function of the public, and it is, above all, the Theory of Reception which, from the end of the 1960s, introduced the reader as a key point in its methodology. This course will review the methodological approaches of the aforementioned trends and will introduce participants in greater depth to the keys and procedures of Reception Theory, its concepts and aims with regard to the reading process. Participants will be made aware of the different types of endotextual resources that make the interaction between text/work and reader possible and whose existence is an indispensable precondition for the reader's recreation of the literary work. Students will have to apply the knowledge acquired through the analysis of specific literary works of their own free choice.

Learning outcomes of the subject

To be able to study in depth the methodologies of literary analysis in general and Reception Theory in particular, always bearing in mind supranational and comparative perspectives.

To be able to use the bibliographical, theoretical and critical instruments necessary for scientific research in literature.

To be able to update and make profitable the knowledge in literary methodology, understanding literature as a fundamental way of understanding, variation or enlargement of reality, at the same time as a means of individual experience and sometimes with influence on society: on different segments of it or in specific areas of its evolution.

Ordinary call: orientations and renunciation

Students who opt for continuous assessment will be assessed on the basis of:

1º their attendance and active participation in the classes (10%)

2nd the practical tasks that they will carry out and/or present in class (30%)

3º the oral presentation of a topic related to the course syllabus or, alternatively, a written work on a topic related to the course syllabus (60%).



Students who take the final assessment will be assessed on the basis of an individual written work of 12-14 pages in length and its oral defence, which will account for 100% of the mark.



EVALUATION in case of returning to online teaching/learning:



The evaluation system, in case of having to return to an online teaching/learning system, will be the same as described above for the ordinary convocation.





The presence of plagiarism or the use of artificial intelligence tools such as ChatGPT for the completion of assignments will lead to a mark of 0. The presence of serious grammatical and spelling errors and/or incorrect or inadequate expression in an academic context will lead to failure.



In order to comply with point 2.3 of the UPV/EHU Master's Degree Permanence Regulations, the Academic Committee of the Master's Degree in Comparative Literature and Literary Studies asks students who wish to withdraw from a specific subject to do so in writing.



It will suffice to send an e-mail to the lecturer (sufficiently in advance of the course grade) stating that ‘D/Dª [name and two surnames of the student], DISCLAIMS from the X sitting of the X subject of the Master's Degree in Comparative Literature and Literary Studies of the UPV/EHU. Vitoria-Gasteiz, XX of XX of 20XX. Signed: [name and two surnames of the student]’.



The e-mail message must be sent from the student's official account [@ikasle.ehu.eus] to the official account of the lecturer of the subject.
