Learning outcomes of the subject

- To summarise the evidence and analyses of proposals in natural language syntax and morphology discussed in the course.

- To apply those analyses to novel data.

- To critically compare and evaluate those proposals.

The evaluation will be based on 4 exercise sets assigned throughout the course. Each set is worth 25% of the final grade. Students will have opportunities to discuss the exercises in class and to resubmit the exercises after receiving feedback.

As a continuous evaluation course, students who have completed 25% of the exercises cannot withdraw from the first call.

Extraordinary call: orientations and renunciation

Students who received a grade of “Fail” or “Declined to Sit” in the first call will be able to resubmit the exercise sets to improve their grade.

Temary

Topics: syntax as cognitive science, the architecture of models of grammar, the positions of subjects and external arguments, head movement, phrasal movement, argument alternations, agreement, control, empty categories, syntactic variation, among others.
