Descripción y Contextualización de la AsignaturaAlternar navegación

This ESP (English for Specific Purposes) course is offered in the second term of the 4th year of the degree in Engineering. It is crucial in the engineers' career as it helps students not only understand the main notions related to their speciality in a foreign language through the technical language practiced, but also to express their ideas in English language correctly in order to be able to further integrate the obtained skills in the development of their professional career.



The course assumes certain knowledge of the language system, in other words, it is designed for intermediate (B2) and/ or advanced (C1) students. It will provide the students with the necessary linguistic resources that will enable them to comprehend oral and written technical texts and to communicate the technical information on the topics related to industrial area orally as well as in written form. The subject English for Industrial Engineering is linked to other subjects comprising the Engineering Degrees, specifically those related to product design, manufacturing or industrial processes in general, since it covers key concepts studied within industrial area.



The linguistic resources obtained in the course will enlarge the variety of the positions the graduates possessing Engineering degrees may occupy, as they will allow them to apply for the posts in multinational companies or the high responsibility posts in which the knowledge of English language is of special importance.

The discipline belongs to the Module of Optional Subjects. Specifically it contributes to the achievement of the following module competences:



1) The capacity to to use specific technical terms in English correctly to communicate effectively in professional environment. It

relates to the CB3 and CB4 degree competences.



2) The capacity to use correctly specific English grammar structures characterizing technical contexts. It

relates to the CB3 and CB4 degree competences.



3) the capacity to comprehend the required technical information (data, procedures, ideas, results etc.) in English presented in oral or written form. It relates to the CB3 and CB4 degree competences.



4) the capacity to use the necessary resources of the English language to effectively search, select, comprehend and communicate the required technical information correctly in written form as well as orally. It relates to the CB3, CB4, C4, M05CM05 and M14CM01 degree competences.



5) The capacity to work in a multinational environment where the knowledge of English is vital. It relates to the C10

degree competence.



6) The capacity to collaborate with other groupmates, to work as a team showing respect to the other group members,

responsibility for the work to implement and initiative. It relates to the C14 degree competence.



7) The capacity to adopt positive and responsible attitude to the tasks included in the continuous evaluation system with the desire to learn new material and to achieve the established goals. It relates to the C12 degree competence.



8) The capacity to acquire a high degree of autonomy both in order to undertake further studies and in face of their own self-training. It relates to the CB5 degree competence.



- Learning outcomes:

In this course students will be able to:



1) Learn technical terms and acronyms related to the area of Industrial engineering;

2) Give and comprehend definitions of the main technical notions;

3) Increase their technical vocabulary having learned and practiced the use of numerous synonyms, antonyms and expressions;

4) Comprehend oral and written adapted and authentic technical texts;

5) Learn the linguistic resources (grammar structures, expressions, discourse markers) used in technical English;

6) Apply the learned linguistic resources to create their own oral and written technical texts and to develop a high level of autonomous work.

7) Work with authentic technical texts in English, searching for information, comprehending it, organizing it properly, analyzing it critically and drawing relevant conclusions;

8) Orally present the information on the topic they have worked on with the aim to demonstrate the critical analysis of the given facts and the proof of the stated objective;

9) Collaborate with their groupmates to implement the given task successfully and achieve the established aims;

10) Develop positive attitude to the task implementation and desire to learn and use English language in professional environment.

Contenidos teórico-prácticosAlternar navegación

Topic 1 INTRODUCTION TO TECHNICAL LANGUAGE. UNITS OF MEASUREMENTS (technical English, units and measurement systems, weights and measures, inspection and quality control). Grammar: Modal verbs and expressions denoting certainty, possibility and probability; Contrasting ideas: Structures denoting comparison and concession.



Topic 2 ENGINEERING DESIGN (working with drawings, discussing dimensions and precision, describing design phases and procedures, resolving design problems). Grammar: Conditionals; Structures denoting cause and effect.



Topic 3 MATERIALS TECHNOLOGY (describing specific materials, categorizing materials, specifying and describing material properties, discussing quality issues). Grammar: Adjectives and adverbs: Comparative and Superlative forms; Modifying comparatives and superlatives; Prepositions; Relative clauses.



Topic 4 MANUFACTURING (describing component shapes and features, explaining and assessing manufacturing techniques; explaining jointing and fixing techniques, describing position of assembled components) Grammar: Prepositions of place; Active Vs Passive voice. Indirect speech: statements, questions, imperative.



Topic 5 APPLYING FOR A JOB (discussing careers in engineering, writing a CV and cover letter, practicing a job interview). Grammar: Modal verbs (advice).

MetodologíaAlternar navegación

During the lectures, the professor will expose the conceptual contents of the subject. Practical activities in the classroom will be carried out through teacher-students interaction, student-student interaction and individual student work. These activities will be guided by the communicative approach and, hence, characterised by the attempt to produce meaningful and real communication, at all levels. As a result, there will be a great emphasis on practical skills acquisition, and authentic or adapted materials will be used, including audio-visual materials that will accompany each topic allowing the student to immerse in the real language atmosphere. The students will get acquainted with different technical contexts and will learn how to apply their knowledge to some new ones. Therefore, autonomous learning will have a great relevance during the term. Exercises to be done outside class hours and individually will be oriented at enhancing autonomous learning and strengthening the language skills of students. The tasks given for homework will receive individual correction or will be discussed in class.

The teaching process will be organized in the conventional, face-to-face mode, or in the bimodal way (if the number of students within a group makes it impossible for everybody to attend the lessons in the conventional mode) in case the sanitary situation allows for it. If, for sanitary reasons, it is not possible to organize the teaching process in the conventional way, it will be adapted to the online mode.

CONTINUOUS ASSESSMENT system is applied for a student’s evaluation. The final mark comes from:



REGULAR CLASS ATTENDANCE 10% (minimum attendance 80%)

ACTIVE PARTICIPATION AND REGULARLY DONE HOMEWORK 15%

TECHNICAL WRITTEN WORK 20%

ORAL PRESENTATION 15% (technical written work submission and its approval (min. 5) are obligatory)

ORAL CONVERSATION 15%

FINAL TEST 25% (reading 5%, listening 5% and vocabulary and grammar test 15%)



For the percentage points to be summed, it is necessary to get at least 5 out of 10 for a given task. The works that receive grades below 5 and works not submitted or submitted after the deadline are considered as a failure and the percentage is equal to zero (0).



If a student takes part in the continuous evaluation and attends less than 80%, the regular class attendance percentage is equal to 0.



Those students who, for a justified reason, cannot attend classes during the course and have the intention to take the final 100% exam, must let the professor know about their decision to withdraw from continuous assessment in written form within 9 weeks from the beginning of the given course, according to the academic calendar of their centre. If the students do not submit the enquiry stating their desire to take the final 100% exam, they will be evaluated according to the established continuous assessment system.



The final 100% exam consists of a technical written work on one of the course topics submitted for evaluation before the exam, a written examination and an oral presentation of the technical work. If a student does not pass the written examination, neither the written technical work nor the oral presentation will be graded and the student will have to retake the subject during the second call, taking 100% exam once again. Regarding the written examination, it is indispensable to obtain 5 out of 10 for the test to get the corresponding percentage points and to get the technical work graded; listening and reading task points will be added to the written examination part only if the minimal grade of 5 is reached for each of them, otherwise the percentage for these tasks will be equal to 0. If a student passes the written exam successfully, their written technical work will be graded and, provided that they pass that part with the grade of 6.5-6.9 (6.9 being the maximal grade), they will be given a date for the oral presentation, which will be optional. If a student’s grade for the written part and technical work does is lower than 6.5, this grade will become the student’s final one.



In the case of final assessment, not sitting the exam on the official date qualifies as an automatic withdrawal from the corresponding call and is assessed as *no grade reported* [ez aurkeztua/ no presentado/a]. However, if the student sits the exam, but the technical work has not been submitted before the exam, this qualifies as an automatic failure and is assessed as *0* [failed/ suspentso/ suspenso].



NB! Students are not allowed to plagiarize, copy other students’ works or use materials or electronic devices

during the partial or final exam. Under any of the aforementioned circumstances, students’ works will be qualified

as an automatic failure and, consequently, assessed as *0* [failed/suspentso/ suspenso]. Furthermore, in the case of

copying, both, the student-author and the student who copied the work will fail the exam or the activity in question.



If a student desires to withdraw from the call, he/she will have to let the teacher know about their decision in written form one month before the end of the studying period. Otherwise, he/she will be evaluated through the continuous evaluation system.

All the positive grades for the tasks will be saved till the second call in case of the students who take part in continuous assessment and fail the subject for the first time, i.e. in May. Thus, these students will be allowed to re-take the tasks failed (i.e. technical written work, oral presentation, oral conversation, final test) or take a 100% exam during the second call in June or July (according to the established schedule).



Those students who withdraw from continuous assessment and do the final 100% exam but fail it, do not sit the exam during the first call or obtain less than 15% for the continuous evaluation, have a chance to take 100% exam during the second call in June or July (according to the established schedule).



The final 100% exam consists of a technical written work on one of the course topics submitted for evaluation before the exam, a written examination and an oral presentation of the technical work. If a student does not pass the written examination, neither the written technical work nor the oral presentation will be graded and the student will have to retake the subject during the second call, taking 100% exam once again.
