Contenidos teórico-prácticosAlternar navegación

The course is interactive and student-centered.

Lessons will include a whole variety of activities focusing on the competencies the students have been working towards in Lengua B I, II, III (C V): Inglés.

The basic core content of the course revolves around three main areas of language analysis:

a) Intense repair work of basic errors and habits the students may have inadvertently developed. The source for this will be the students’ written and oral production.

b) Advanced grammar theory and practice.

c) Individual and group work on different tasks (written and spoken) and individual work on essay writing.

Actividades de docencia / aprendizaje

A) In the classroom, these include:

Close scrutiny of potentially problematic grammatical, phonetic and lexical aspects of the text being analysed. At the production level, multiple rephrasing will be one of the main tasks. This kind of activity is first guided by the tutor and then the students work on their own, taking on the role of prospective teachers (CM06). Active use of grammars, dictionaries and internet resources is essential (G008) at this stage, with special focus on developing awareness of interference from their mother tongue(s) and interlanguage in their English.

Listening to news and other audio materials for content. The students then relay it to the rest of the classroom. This is done in groups. Language analysis takes backstage in this kind of activity.

Error analysis: The tutor signals what aspects of the students’ production need revision (in the form of lists of problems in their summaries and essays) and the students bring their suggestions for correction to the classroom. (CM08, CM06)

B) Outside the classroom:

Students are expected to engage actively with the English language on their own and to do out-of-class work in order to consolidate learning.

In addition to the activities in the classroom, the students are expected to do two written set assignments (each including a language analysis section, a summary and a brief critical evaluation). (CM03, CM05). The students are provided with detailed guidelines on how to do their assignments.

The students will also be required to hand in three transcripts of different English sources (M03CM01) as part of their listening assessment.

A) Set assignments (20%);

B) A written exam (40%);

C) An oral exam (25%);

D) A listening comprehension test (15%).

A) SET ASSIGNMENTS (see above):

Important: Regular class attendance is a sine-qua-non requirement for assignments to be collected and graded. Students who fail to attend lessons will therefore be assessed on sections (B, C and D) only.

The work submitted by the students must be entirely their own. The students must identify and include the source of all facts, ideas, opinions and viewpoints mentioned through in-text referencing and the relevant sources should all be included in the list of references at the end of their work. Direct quotations from books, journal articles, internet sources or any other source must be acknowledged and the sources cited must be identified in the list of references.

Plagiarism will not be tolerated.

B) THE WRITTEN EXAM will consist of three sections:

a) Section A: A vocabulary/grammar test including any items of English grammar / usage / vocabulary covered in the course (30%)

b) Section B: A summary of a text (250 words) (10%)

C) THE ORAL EXAM:

The students will take two tests in which they will have to:

a) Read out a short piece of an English book (available on eGela). The students have to prepare five excerpts, as the day of the exam one will be randomly assigned to them (10%).

b) Report on an item of news previously selected from an English source, and be prepared to answer questions about it. (15%)

- The students' reading performance should be free from pronunciation mistakes and follow English stress patterns, rhythm and intonation. As for the spoken English, it should be fluent and free from grammatical mistakes, as well as display a wide range of vocabulary and structures.

- The students have to sign up on eGela for the day/time of this test.

- The students have to send their pieces of news to the tutors by 26 February 2021 per email. No extensions will be allowed, and if the students do not send the piece of news by this date, their oral exam grades will automatically lead to a 0.

These two sections of the final exam will be carried out during office hours.

D) THE LISTENING COMPREHENSION TEST:

This part will be assessed by means of two different parts.

a) During the course the students will hand in three transcripts from different English sources. These transcripts should include a literal and accurate transcription of the listening.

b) The students will have to complete a final listening comprehension test in class. More instructions will be given in class.The grade of the listening part will be an aggregate score of the three transcripts and the final listening comprehension test.

Important: The final grade will be an aggregate score of all sections above (a-d), PROVIDED THE STUDENT HAS PASSED THE WRITTEN EXAMINATION (pass mark 50%).

If necessary, the tests will be conducted online.

The use of mobile or electronic devices as sources of information is strictly forbidden during the tests, as is the use of lecture notes, books or any other source.

If the student wishes to withdraw from the first call, they have to let the tutor know at least one month before the end of the course; otherwise they will be assessed with a 0.

WITHDRAWAL FROM CONTINUOUS ASSESSMENT:

All students have the right to be evaluated according to the final evaluation procedure independently of whether or not they have participated in the continuous assessment module.

The students who choose to withdraw from continuous assessment must let their tutor know within the first 9 weeks of the course.

In this case, the students will carry out a written exam (60%), an oral exam (25%), and a listening comprehension test (15%). In this case, not sitting the exam qualifies as an automatic “no presentado”.

Otherwise, it will be assumed that the student wishes to be graded by continuous assessment.
