Comparative Linguistics in Synchrony and DiachronyThe comparative perspective in linguistics can be applied both to the synchronic and the diachronic study of languages. This seminar will encompass and combine the two approaches, focusing on different sides of the comparative analysis of grammatical constructions and the newest hypotheses concerning their nature, origin, and development. Topics such as the commonalities of asymmetric coding, the effects of animacy on linguistic structures, or the ambiguous and redundant elements in the grammar will be dealt with in the synchronic part of the seminar. Then, the discussion will center around diachronic aspects like the genesis of grammar and new lexicon, in which different mechanisms of change are involved, the historical evolution of morphological strategies and the impact of language contact on the grammatical matter and pattern of languages.
