POLYMER TECHNOLOGY GROUP

Objectives

The investigation of the group is focused on the processing/structure/properties relationships of polymeric materials. The main field is the control of the properties of the pure polymers and of multicomponent polymer materials through the processing parameters. Other subjects of interest are:

  • Blends of thermoplastics  

  • Polymer nanocomposites 

  • Thermoplastics filled with inorganic fillers 
  • Reprocessing and recycling of polymeric materials

Processing is usually carried out in the melt state. The structure is determined by the phase behaviour, by scanning and transmission electronic microscopy and by X-Ray diffraction. The data referred to the phase behavior are obtained by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and by dynamic-mechanical analysis (DMTA). The mechanical properties are mainly determined by tensile, flexural, impact, fatigue and creep tests. Several thermal properties as HDT, Vicat and MFI and electrical properties as conductivity, permitivity and tracking index, are also determined.
