Joana Acha es profesora en el departamento de Procesos Psicológicos Básicos y su desarrollo  de la UPV/EHU y coordinadora de la asignatura de desarrollo cognitivo en el área evolutiva. Se doctoró en el 2009 en la Universidad de Valencia con la tesis  Análisis experimental del efecto de similitud ortográfica y los procesos de codificación de letras durante la lectura, (publicada en la Universidad de Valencia  en el 2010). Ha sido investigadora en la Universidad de Massachusetts Amherst, y en el Basque Centre on Cognition Brain and Language de Donostia. Actualmente se dedica a la investigación sobre los procesos cognitivos implicados en el desarrollo del lenguaje y la lectura, y es profesora de desarrollo cognitivo infantil, neurociencia y dificultades de aprendizaje.
