Oceanus Plasticus book

Edited by Leire Fernandez and Eduardo

This book is a design creation of the Students of Arts school of the University of the Basque Country. Lead by Leire and Eduardo, PiE- UPV/EHU has collaborated in with the biologic and contamination part of it.

Oceanus Plasticus is an initiative born from the environmental commitment of the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU) to the sustainability of our oceans. This graphic design project reinterprets the symbolic representations of medieval cartographic tradition, in which sea monsters were depicted to warn of maritime dangers. In a way, this book should be seen as a modern version of the warnings and curses spread by those ancient bestiaries.

Through chimeric creatures—born from the interaction between marine species and plastic waste—the project seeks to raise awareness about the rampant pollution affecting our oceans. These new monsters are the result of a hybridization process forced by human recklessness.
