First Lego League formative challenge

As part of the First Lego League (FLL) Euskadi programme, participating schools engage in educational visits to PiE-UPV/EHU. These visits are coordinated by Innobasque, the Basque Innovation Agency, and are designed to fulfill the formative training requirements of the FLL. During the experience, students explore STEM-related topics in a hands-on environment, contributing to their learning process and team preparation. The initiative promotes innovation and scientific curiosity among young learners through direct engagement with professionals and research activities linked to the competition’s annual theme.

Why Are There Strandings on Our Coasts?

This educational program consists of six visits to Basque organizations working in the challenge of the FLL. Organized by the Basque Innovation Agency, Innobasque. During the visit, students learn what a stranding is, why marine mammals (like seals, whales, and dolphins) and sea turtles end up on our shores, and how to respond. They’ll also explore how PiE-UPV/EHU, through the SAREUS project, manages Euskadi’s stranding network in collaboration with other agents. Professionals involved include PiE-UPV/EHU staff and researchers specializing in biology (microbiology, cell biology, histology, molecular biology), environmental science, chemistry, and physics. The project is supported by Spain’s Biodiversity Foundation, part of the Ministry for Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge (MITECO), within the EU-funded Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan (PRTR), and by the Basque Government.
