Doctor of Medicine from the University of Basque Country. Medical Specialist in “Legal and Forensic Medicine”. Specialist in “Anthropology and Forensic Biology” obtained at the Complutense University in Madrid. Master in “Medical Law” from the Complutense University in Madrid. Professor of Legal and Forensic Medicine at the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Basque Country and at the Basque Institute of Criminology, where he has been teaching since 1983.
He has carried out different research projects on human remains dating from various chronologies, with a special interest in pathological aspects. He has directed various research works on matters of Human Rights infringements via the Basque Institute of Criminology and the
Human Rights Directorate of the Basque Government.
He heads a workgroup formed to study the mass graves and disappeared from the Spanish Civil War, collaborating with various associations of historical memory on several hundreds of exhumations throughout Spain. With regards to Forensic Anthropology, he collaborates in international missions with the International Committee of the Red Cross and the Forensic Medical Service of Chile.
