Description: The High-Performance Computing (HPC) cluster, also known as ARINA, at the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU) is a state-of-the-art computing resource designed to support a wide variety of scientific and engineering research activities.

Technical characteristics:

  • A large number of compute nodes with high-performance processors. More than 9,000 compute cores providing over 440 TFlops of computing power.
  • Advanced network connectivity for fast data transfer and communication.
  • High-capacity parallel file systems for efficient data storage and retrieval.
  • A comprehensive software environment with a wide range of scientific applications and libraries.

Applications:

  • Simulation:
    • Simulation of materials and molecules at the atomic level using molecular dynamics, quantum Monte Carlo, general electronic structure methods, and modeling of biopolymers (proteins, DNA, etc.) at the structural and/or molecular dynamics level
    • Simulation of materials at the macroscopic level, including heat diffusion and stress resistance
    • Meteorological and climatological simulations, and computational fluid dynamics (CFD)
  • Bioinformatics and Genetics applications
  • Theoretical physics, astrophysics, and particle physics
  • Image rendering
  • Database management
  • Calculations that, due to their characteristics, require a high-performance computer or that, while not necessarily requiring one, are best performed on servers
  • Stock market simulation and business management
  • Parallel computing
