I hold a degree in Filología Inglesa (1985 - UPV/EHU), + Dissertation on Presupposition (Tesina 1986 - UPV/EHU) + PhD thesis on Mecanismos semántico-pragmáticos en el análisis de la metáfora (Semantic and pragmatic mechanisms in the analysis of metaphor) (1991 - UPV/EHU).
I have taught degree courses in Semantics and Pragmatics from 1990 to the present (English Philology, English Studies), and Doctorate and Master’s courses in Pragmatics since 1992 (Interdepartmental Programme in Linguistics). I have also taught English language courses (C2 consolidation) in the Degree in Translation and Interpreting.
The area of research I have focused on is cognitive pragmatics and its interface with semantics, specifically focusing on how the inferential and the linguistic systems interact in the interpretation of literal vs non-literal speech, on how to draw the line between explicit and implicit aspects of communication, and what types of implicit content we can justifiably assume in a cognitively plausible theory of utterance interpretation. With regards to the latter, I have taken a critical stance on the notion of unarticulated constituent in pragmatics, and also on the grammatical view of scalar implicature.
