Module 6: Describing and Communicating Impact

Where: Faculty of Social Sciences and Communication, third floor, seminar room "C" Leioa (Bizkaia)

In this workshop you will learn how to identify and describe intended and achieved outcomes and eventual impact from your research. You will practice a structured approach to articulating the intended non-academic impact for funding proposal and at the other end of the journey, communicating what has changed using impact evidence. This workshop will help to consolidate the learning from previous sessions in the Impac training series.

The workshop covers:

  • Planning dissemination and engagement with impact in mind
  • Identifying your impact and apply storytelling techniques to communicate
  • Tailoring impact stories and presentation to resonate with difference audiences

By the end, participants will:

  • Have a better understanding of how to articulate the intended and achieved impact from research
  • Understand the types of evidence needed create compelling impact narratives
  • Had the opportunity to develop their own impact narratives

Lecturer: Saskia Walcott. Chief Executive
Walcott Communications (United Kingdom)

Saskia Walcott is Chief Executive of Walcott Communications Ltd (WCL), a UK-based consultancy specialising in research impact. She has worked in and with the UK higher education sector for over 20 years, supporting researchers and institutions to embed impact into their work and culture. 

Saskia founded WCL in 2010 and has since trained and mentores hundreds os academics, helping them to develop meaningful and sustainable approaches to impact. She has supportes universities in shaping institutional strategies and has contributed to the development of hundreds of REF impact case studies across all four main panels during REF 2014 and REF 2021. Her clients include universities across the UK, Europe, Sotheast Asia and Australia. 

She served on the Board of ARMA (Association of Research Managers and Administrators) and chairs its Professional Development Committee, overseeing the quality and relevance of ARMA´s training, qualifications, and annual conference. 

Prior to foundind WCL, Saskia hels senior roles including Head of Communications and Public Engagement at the Economic and Social Research Council (2003-2010), Directos of Strategic Engagement at UWE Bristol, and Research Impact Manager at the university of Bath. She is widely recognised as one of the UK´s leading practitioners in research impact.
